Where would you place the Montblanc brand amongst others?

I haven't really given consideration to this brand until I saw a foreign move with Mont Blanc heavily endorsed. Among which other brands would you place the Montblanc outside of the Richemont group?

I'd say it stacks up alongside Longines from Swatch Group, Baume & Mercier within Richemont.

As of a few years ago it was more up market, with their cheapest automatic pieces starting mid 2kUSD for three hand automatics and 4k USD for chronographs, 7k for in-house movements in the TimeWalker range, and 10k+ for the Nicolas Rieussec line. I'd say at that point they were just below IWC. Montblanc is a weird company when it comes to watches. They don't really have a "sport" line anymore after they phased out the Sport Chrongraph line (and even those didn't look sporty). The designs in the Heritage and Heritage Chronometrie lines are more classic and Jerome Lambert's focus has been to position the company as "affordable luxury" that also has a perceived "value for money proposition".

I really wanted a JLC MUT but after trying on a Montblanc Heritage Chronometer and reading the reviews and comparing the price it has won out and on my list it is truly a lot of watch for the money compared to the competition.

...until you attempt to sell it (horrible resale). Montblanc is an odd company; majority of their watches are ETA-based designer watches that are grossly overpriced. However, their top-shelf pieces are horological masterpieces with highly technical innovations. I feel their cheap ETA watch lines cloud their finer accomplishments. I personally do not care for the brand and think they should stick to pens and cologne.

I think Montblanc are haunted by their older ETA designer watch style watches, but I personally think that their are doing a great job at their recent line ups (since 2015 when they launched the Heritage Spirit series). I don't think they should stick to pens based on all the great watches they released recently.

I'm a total sucker for the Montblanc 1858. I tried one on at an airport once, and just drooled over it. However, this question is what has always held me back from getting one. Not sure it's worth the pricetag when I could have something with more history/prestige.

A nearly there mid tier brand mostly bland, but with occasional masterpieces (1858)

Has never appealed to me as I think my money is better placed elsewhere.
