Off Topic post OLD THREAD - Design Thread 7: Dial Shade

Project THOR – Design Thread 7

    Dial Shade

Now that we have decided that our project watch will use a media-blasted stainless steel case with a DLC finish, we are ready to move on to the first discussion - of several - concerning the watch’s dial.
The first required step we need to take in our design of the Project THOR dial will be to determine its shade.

The dial’s shade will greatly impact the overall appearance of the watch, not to mention that it will directly influence our upcoming vote regarding the material and finish we will use for the bezel. And although most would agree that the selected theme for our project would dictate that we choose a dark shade for the dial, we don’t want to assume anything, which is why every design element in the project is open to discussion before a vote is held.

Please understand that this is not a discussion about the dial’s colour, just its shade, and as a result we really just need to decide whether it will be dark, or light in nature.

For this discussion there is no need to present a list of options ahead of time since there are only two choices involved. Also noteworthy, given the cut and dry nature of this design element we may shorten the discussion period and vote if it becomes blatantly obvious that the majority of participants favour one of the two choices.

Finally, please keep the discussion on topic!

    From the Designer’s Desk:

“The discussion and vote on the dial shade (light or dark) will have a great impact on the further steps including the color and finish of the bezel. For example, a bronze bezel may look good in combination with a black case and black dial (dark shade), but perhaps not so good with a white or even yellow dial (light shade).”

The long awaited post has been opened...

I am still favouring for the bronze bezel, so +1 for dark shade.

The term "dark shade" actually reminds me of "The Dark Side of The Moon".

Re: Design Thread 7: Dial Shade

It's simple for me: dark. I don't envision this project using a light shade dial given the chosen theme (yeah, yeah, there were the odd exceptions to the rule, but for my own personal interest I have no desire to see the THOR watch go down that road).

    Everyone else?

NOTE: This might seem like a nonsensical design discussion to have, but it is from our designer's perspective highly relevant as it will help with mock-ups in upcoming discussions. So, before anyone complains, please trust us that this is one of those steps that we just need to go, and unless a big debate breaks out between using a light or dark shade, we can get it over with fairly quickly.

I think the colour used on the OVM would look good. Don't know if it is considered light or dark, depending on light conditions it can be either.

Dark. Slate / carbon fibre tone at lightest.

Dark. Considering that in some lighting conditions it can appear almost black, I wouldn't call the vintage grey dial a light shade. If the dial was white, or yellow, or even a pastel pink you would never call it dark even in a dimly lit room.
