Metro 38 Datum makes it possible: The new Metro version may not have a power reserve indicator, but does have the sensational NOMOS swing system
Glashütte/Berlin, February 2015. What would Metro be without a power reserve indicator? The answer is wonderful, well-proportioned, clear. And a touch larger—1.5mm to be precise. The white silver-plated dial with delicate minute indexes and the extra-large date indicator appear considered and modern, while the blue hour indexes at three, nine, and twelve create a beautiful contrast to the red seconds hand. Particularly special: Metro 38 Datum also ticks with swing, the NOMOS in-house escapement, the part with which the watchmaking company enjoyed a major coup in 2014.
This essential pace-setting component, which is decisive for the accuracy, robustness, and durability of a watch, can only be produced by a very small number of watchmaking companies. Since spring last year, NOMOS Glashütte is one of them, and has even managed to produce the part in series, which makes it independent from third-party supplies. DUW 4101, the fine hand-wound caliber at work in Metro 38 Datum, is clearly visible through the sapphire crystal glass back. With its introduction, hand-wound NOMOS movements with a date indicator are now also equipped with swing.
The new dial of Metro 38 Datum was created by Mark Braun, the Berlin-based designer behind Metro. Only introduced at Baselworld 2014, NOMOS Glashütte has already received the German Design Award as well as the Good Design Award and now also the iF Product Design Award for this already bestselling model. As time-consuming as designing the dial was, finding the right case size for Metro 38 Datum was almost more so; the new timepiece is part of the 38 series from NOMOS, but an exactly 38-millimeter diameter would have been too small to give the dial sufficient space.
Various prototypes had to be produced, and lugs, back, and heights adjusted accordingly, in order to create the perfectly proportioned watch. According to Braun, the new version is “a harmonious and welcome accompaniment to Metro—and not only from a design point of view.”
Metro 38 Datum is available with retailers from June 2015.
