Universal Geneve 287: broken minute recording jumper

    Hi all,

This is my first post on this awesome forum after lurking for a few months. Just recently got into some vintage watch collecting and picked up my first piece I'm really proud of- a 40s era Universal Geneve Uni-Compax with their 287 movement. Upon opening the caseback, to my dismay, I noticed a broken minute-recording jumper. In the below pics you'll see the movement sans half of the jumper, along with a picture of the separated piece.

I've already found a guy online with the part in stock, but he's looking for $115, which seems excessive. Are there any other drop-in replacements? Can I JB weld this sucker back together? This will be my first foray into mechanical watch repair, so please forgive my complete lack of knowledge!

Thanks so much for your time!

Rather than using JB weld, you need to superglue or heat print both broken pieces (carefully arranged as the whole part would have been ) onto a piece of the correct thickness steel that you have pre-annealed. Cut it out roughly with a piercing saw then file it to shape and drill as necessary. Detach the bits of the original and temper your new part.

Or just use a pre-made replacement. How much do you think a rare(ish) replacement part for a watch from the 1940s should cost?

Tough watch to start on as your 'first' , hope you get it sorted, sometimes if you don't like the price you just have to wait however it is an old watch sometimes you have to bite the bullet

This is an excellent "first" watch to learn on. There are many lessons to be learned with this watch, none of which that solve your problem but will be instructive none the less. I think I just poked a hole in my cheek with my tongue, excuse me for a moment.
