Confused Which affordable MILSPEC should I get? P490 or P5900

Hi guys, it's my first post on Watchuseek.

I have been reading the forums since some weeks ago, but I just got the urge to post today.

Got to tell you are an amazing community!

I have a dilemma about which one of these watches to get, the Stocker & Yale Sandy P490 or the Traser P5900

I love the simple look of this watches, so down to earth yet somehow outstanding, and the wonders of tritium at such affordable prices.

I think the Sandy has a swiss ETA mechanical movement, and the Traser has a quartz one. About the Sandy I don't care winding it manually or not being so accurate, and I will not care getting a new battery for the Traser after some years. But which one is more reliable?

I wonder which one has the best tritium vials? Heard somewhere that some P490 from the early 90's still shine like new, but I could bet Traser's tritium vials are top notch too.

I could get the P490 for $145 and the P5900 for $105 buying online, but at this price range, money is not an issue too, but the Traser's price is more attractive.

As a noob, I appeal to your wisdom as military watches connoisseurs. Which one should I get and why?

Don't know, maybe I should get both. Or maybe there is another one very much like them or better and I don't know it.

    :thanks

Welcome to the forum, DR Dreadlocks!

If money is not an issue ... you can get both, and even sell one later on.

The one is more authentic, though with at least one halflife cycle of the tritium (half-life is around 12.5 years) already spent, I cannot imagine that the luminous strength would be on par with the current model.

Also, water-resistance would be an issue (even for getting the watch accidentally wet wen washing the hands), and the P5900 would outperform the P490 IMHO.

Generally, I find the Traser watches with a rotatable bezel superior, but they are also larger.

Re: Which affordable MILSPEC should I get? P490 or P5900

Thank you very much for the info, Crusader, I truly appreciate it.

Seems that Traser is an all around better option, I don't want to foxtrot the P490 for just washing my hands without care.

The P6500 seems very attractive to me too, both for the price and its characteristics.

BTW Crusader, I have read your article at:
    http://www.tz-uk.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=6447

It's an excellent and informative review. There you wrote that the P6500's bezel paint goes off easily, any solution for it? Should I get a Luminox, KHS, Dievas or UZI? Does the Marathon one has the same problem?

I like Traser because IMHO is the closest to "The Real McCoy" (Stocker&Yale / Marathon).

But authenticity is not a issue for me too. I just want a nice affordable MILSPEC-like watch that will work OK in MILSPEC-like conditions.

Changing subject a little: I cannot stop drooling when seeing the prices of watches at GSA Advantage...

    It's a shame I cannot buy there

Getting back to my track, I'll keep gathering a little more knowledge from you guys before taking a decision. Thanks!

Opps, my mistake Crusader, you said that the one with the bezel printing problem was the Marathon.

No problemo with the P6500, rigth?

It's the Marathon's bezel paint that flaked off easily, whereas the bezel piant on the P6500 is very resilient.

Why worry about paint? Get a PVD Luminox for half the price and no flaking

Nice idea airbornerescue, maybe with a little of luck I would get an F-117 at half the price, I really prefer the GMT bezel.

Re: Which affordable MILSPEC should I get? P490 or P5900

    i owned both....p6502...p6500... f117 pvd...uzi protector
and now i'm looking at the p5900 too.....
this because it is supposed that we have to use the watch we are going to buy.....
so..... i do not want to scratch a watch paid much money...
but this is only my personal thoughts.........
I hate to scratch the crystal for eg..
so i will be so unhappy if i will have to put some sign on the face of
    my p6502...
if i would like to use the watch as a beater and i would like to have the
    tritium vials power too....
maybe the p5900 will be a good choice.......
i am planning of buying one too...
watches are meant to tell times..
