Helvetia Pilot Watch - Info Needed

    Hi,
I recently acquired this Helvetia Pilot / Aviator watch. I'm interested in some info about it. Searching through internet I've never seen dial like this (to have propeller sign and "Shocprotec" written). Also watch is coming with Helvetia 80C movement which should be late 40s, early 50s movement and doesn't fit the years Helvetia Pilot watches were made. Any info, please.

Re: Helvetia Pilot Watch - Info Needed

    Hello,

Have you seen my site on Helvetia watches? https://www.helvetiahistory.co.uk/

This watch is unusual. Normally these pilots watches had 51S-10 (41mm case) or 81-24 (36mm case) movements. The earliest 80C movement I have recorded is 1943 and the latest pilots watch 1945 so it is possible though that particular regulator type didn't seem to appear until late 40s.

I would be tempted to say the movement has been replaced, 7011 is a case normally used for 1930s pilots watches with 51S-10 movements. However the Shocprotec on the dial is interesting as this was never normally used on the dial of these watches so that is unusual and it may be a very late variant, the dial looks original to me.

Does it have a serial number, they are normally on the inner case back, I can date it for you then.

    Thanks. Carl

One other thing. They don't normally have stainless steel backs and are usually quite corroded so again this points to a late date.

I have looked further into your watch and have found 2 other examples with exactly the same movement, I don't think this is a movement swap but a late version of these watches. The type of regulator in this movement was patented by Helvetia in 1952. If you have a serial number I can date it more exactly.

Hi I have the same type, with C80 movement, stainless steel back ( with 7011 marking ) Inside the case I have a serial number: 4955154

I had before Helvetia pilot, with a different movement, " leaf style hands ", and sub second covered the number 6.

Is it possible to find out the production date based on the serial?

Hello, sorry I didn't see your message earlier.

The Calibre 80C Helvetia pilots watches seem to be a later re-issue. The regulator on the movement wasn't patented until 1953 and the two examples I have serial numbers for, including yours, date them to 1960.

Have a look here for info on the watches:

    https://www.helvetiahistory.co.uk/1930s-pilots-watches

    And here for serial numbers:

    https://www.helvetiahistory.co.uk/serial-numbers

There was a discussion about these later watches on MWR, including yours when it was on Ebay:

    https://www.mwrforum.net/forums/show...movement/page2

Your pictures don't seem to be showing. If you could post them again I would be interested, and pictures of the other watch you had if possible.

    Many thanks. Carl.
