Daily quartz driver: dive watch vs chronograph

Wanting a daily quartz driver for around the house (and probably wearing to the office sometimes, too - business casual office where pretty much no watch would be underdressed or overdressed). Thinking of these two. I have various thoughts on each and my own personal history with dive watches and chronographs, but wanted to leave it open. Yes, I know in most watch conversations, these watches are apples and oranges, but for me they're in the exact same category: 40mm cool-looking (to me) tool watches, quartz movement, sapphire crystal, good value, and timing features I'll rarely ever use (bezel or chronograph).

    I'd say chronograph:
    1. It comes on a steel bracelet, which I personally prefer
    2. It's a bit dressier, which might be a good thing for an office watch. I don't know your office situation but I can easily see the chrono under a sport coat sleeve; the diver not so much
    3. I'm not a mechanical snob but the chrono has a better 'excuse' being a quartz, being that mechanical chronographs are obviously much more complicated and expensive. Also the small seconds hand ticking away in a sub dial while the large central chrono hand sits still in the middle makes the lack of a sweep less noticable.

But then I'd totally disregard that if I just liked the diver better. I personally own only one quartz chrono and many divers, I just don't like this Scurfa all that much.

I think the chrono may be more versatile in everyday applications (work, casual) vs the Scurfa.

Whats the WR on that Straton though? 100m?

The Straton for me! Looks great and stylish for a GADA watch.

Divers have better legibility and that cuts the deal for me.
There is a time for everything...
a time to search and a time to give up,
a time to keep and a time to throw away

Straton chrono. Has the date complication.

Re: Daily quartz driver: dive watch vs chronograph

    Some of my thoughts:
I'm getting more and more divers, but I actually don't like the timing bezel on them. What I like is the styling, toughness, and big-time legibility.
I try a chronograph now and again, but I always end up not wearing them. I think a lot of it is legibility concerns and how much more precisely and easily my G Shocks can time stuff when I'm serious about timing things like workout times or cooking.

    So, pros for each:
    The Scurfa:
    I love green
The watch I just flipped to make space for this was a different Scurfa, and I adored it. I absolutely had this green one in mind as a direct replacement.
    Legibility, legibility, legibility!
I like the comfort and adjustability of the rubber strap.

    The Straton:
This is THE chronograph I've been wanting for a long time - smaller size, horizontal bi-compax style, easy to read date at 6 o'clock.
    I love bracelets.
Many of my other watches are divers or similarly styled sport watches, so the chronograph is a bit different. I'd like the variety.
Note: I had a Dan Henry 1964 which I thought would be my perfect chronograph, but the silver hands blended with the dial to me making them hard to read. This has silver hands, I think, but I think the black subdials, dial colors I'd pick, and simpler layout would keep it plenty readable. Also, just flipped a Dan Henry 1972. Loved it, but didn't wear it much for some reason. Dial too busy with things I didn't use maybe? Would this be different? Bicompax like this might make the difference. I do love the look of this thing.

    Get whatever moves you.
Chrono looks slick and it no less legible than diver. Warm brown dial is far more neutral choice (no problem wearing it with anything) than aged green of diver.
I find Chrono more of style than actually useful thing. For what i used chronos, digital made far more sense.
That said i never found use for diver watch either since i was swimming and skin diving with mere 50m WR watches since forever.
So i see both as style choices supported by some functionality. Get one which you going to stare most to enjoy it looks.
Sapphire is for sure nice thing to have.

Rolling eyes Re: Daily quartz driver: dive watch vs chronograph

If it was me then I would shop around and buy one of each!

For the Diver I would get a Cheap But Great Casio, stick it on a bracelet if you don't like the strap!

Then get a great quality Swiss if you like but water resistant Chronograph. I bought this Rotary speedyish Homage:

So I have got the best of both Worlds, if I am in water I would take the Casio, if I need a Chrono, the Rotary does the business but looks sharp for business IMHO.

    YMMV

    Best regards,

I can't see the point of a watch that doesn't have the date.
