Off topic but related: Can anyone recommend someone in Maryland for watch mods and or watch repairs/servicings? It appears my guy may have retired. Thanks.

Are you close to Pentagon City? There is a watchmaker that does very well there at the entrance of the Metro into the Pentagon City Mall. I personally have not used it.. but from observation by passing multiple times.. he does very well and seems to be a trusted watch repair.

As a serial (possibly compulsive) modder, I must say the VALUE of the experience of working on a watch is like that of any other experience: it is, and increases with, how it transforms the doer for the better.
You can learn so much by actually getting your hands in there.

I openly admit: I did, especially in the beginning, some super fuglies.
But life is merciful: if you keep at it, one day, you get good at something, and that is a sweet feeling.

I have sold a goodly number of my mods on the bay to many customer testimonies of satisfaction.
And that's a nice feeling too -- that I was able to offer something special/uncommon to someone.

I did this yesterday. Am quite pleased with it.

^ You see, although that mod isn't my cup of tea I can still see why it would float someone's boat, and why modding is intrinsically cool.

I get it. You should see my "franken-stereo." Actually no, because it's fugly.

I'm usually not into gold on watches, but that is a seriously nice mod. Well done.

Modding watches is like everything in life, whether that is changing houses, girlfriends, cars, wives, lawnmower, or haircuts. The new is not always better than the old, and sometimes it is the best thing one could have done.
