    Tissot or Oris?

    Hello,

I am about to purchase my first Swiss watch, and I am trying to buy the best possible watch at a specific price point that will become clear when I list the two watches I am considering. As this site is frequented by people with watch expertise, I was hoping to get some meaningful guidance.

Of the watches below, which would you favor and why?

Oris Artelier Date Automatic Black Dial Stainless Steel Mens Watch 733-7670-4054LS: Oris Artelier Date Automatic Black Dial Stainless Steel Mens Watch 733-7670-4054LS

    Or

Tissot Luxury Automatic Black Dial Black Leather Mens Watch T0864071605100: Tissot Luxury Automatic Black Dial Black Leather Mens Watch T0864071605100

Is there another watch I should be considering instead at this same price point?

I look forward to any advice people have.

    Best,

    JSmoothy

Welcome to WUS! Oris and a tissot are both very good, and slightly underrated brands. Between the two, I'd go with the Oris, mostly due to the 1mm difference in dial size, and the placement of the date window. The truth though is that they are very similar, and the price difference could be the deciding factor. You really can't go wrong with either.

    Thank you Gazza74!

One complicating factor is that I have an authorized Tissot dealer in my hometown, but no Oris dealer. There are two watch repair shops that could do repairs in any event, but I take some comfort in having an AD of Tissot nearby.

Having scanned this forum, there seems to be a prevailing thought that Oris is better, so that may be enough to push me in the other direction, but right now I am still caught trying to decide. I also noticed Oris recieved many complimentary reviews from AskMen magazine, with one writer stating the brand was on the way up in terms of general regard.

    Decisions decisions.

I like the Oris a LITTLE better, but not enough to pay $400 more for it!

There are lots of watches in this price range with a similar design. For example you could get a vintage Omega and a service for it. Or a Hamilton Jazzmaster. Or an Archimede. Check 'm out.

Oris isn't "better." They both use stock Swiss movements with the same specs, and are both well finished and executed. Maybe the forum just generally prefers Oris aesthetics.

I like the Oris' hands a bit better, and also the more balanced date placement.

Many thanks Jeremy! I will look at the Hamilton. I would love to own an Omega, but I am afraid to buy vintage, as I am concerned that the watch may not be "as advertised" on-line in terms of the overall condition, or worse, I am worried the watch could be comprised of replacement parts.

The Oris *is* better. The fit and finish will be better, and the movement will have been reworked by Oris instead of dropped in by Tissot.

Whether it's worth the premium is up to you.

Reworked by Oris? How? By stamping their name on the rotor and regulating it? Unless there's something SPECIFIC that is different, I don't buy it.

Do they use a higher grade of ETA movement? Finish it better? Convince me.
