Re: Vote for the "BEST" field watch

Here is my new Bertucci on a black NATO. I would have added this one to the poll, but I didn't have it at the time. For $28.99 it seems to tick all the boxes as far as the dial format goes.

Yeah... not sure what pilot has time to deal with all that in a cockpit. As Paulo Fanton stated about his a-13a watch in a wornandwound interview...

"For me, a pilot [watch] is above all a flight instrument that is there to function for you just like any other instrument in the cockpit. It’s a very challenging environment that calls for radical solutions to address safety and ease of operation. It’s not a watch to show off to your friends while drinking a Martini downtown."

I think it depends on which style of pilots watch you're thinking about. Here are a couple of my pilot watches, which both have quite busy dials...

But then I have this one, which is less busy:

Nice watches. With regard to clean dials, I'm not saying "must...". Obviously, there are certainly many busy pilot dials.

But if you look at the spec design for both the A and B dialed b-uhr designs, spartan and legible was the key. Though some manufacturers have cluttered up their dials, there are many... Stowa's TO1 TESTAF, Paulo Fanton's A-13A or Torgoen's T10 to name a few... who keep true to the early aesthetics.

The Seiko SNK is still in the lead. I am surprised that Luminox has received so few votes so far.

^ I posted before and my vote was for the Luminox.

I’ve won the Luminox quality control lottery twice.

But the SNK is no slouch - especially with sapphire.

For me, it's not an anti-Luminox thing. I have four Lumi's and I'm definitely a fan of the brand. I too must have won the QC lottery, because mine are all great watches. But that particular model doesn't say 'field watch' to me. I voted for the Seiko, which is like the love child of a field watch and a flieger, so it's half field watch ish.

I have the black, blue and cream versions of the seiko, and they are great watches.

This post got me re-thinking my field watch sub-collection.

Marc and LongIslandWatch has some cool offerings - the basics like Seiko SNK and a Casio solar, but also Hemel, Marathon, and Bertucci. I like them all for different reasons. And while the Hamilton is the obvious choice for most, I have always used my field watches (mostly Wenger and Casio) as 'beaters,' which to me need to be cheap and durable, so the Hamilton at $400+ is out, as I'd rather spend/save that on another dress watch at this point.

I would pull the trigger immediately if the Seiko 5 had no day/date complication, and if it had hand-winding. The reason is because I mostly wear dress watches, and each morning while getting dressed I pick up my automatics and hand-wind them, especially if I'm feeling they won't get any wrist time during the week. So, how long does one have to shake and twist a Seiko 5 (7S26) to get it to last another 24 hours? Again, without a day/date complication I wouldn't give a second thought (since setting is so easy without them), but with the day/date complication and no hand-winding it's a bit of a conundrum in my mind.

Brandon, did you mod your Seiko 5 for the sapphire? Or did you have someone do it for you?

So, depending on the answers, I might take the plunge on the Seiko 5 (I've glossed over it for as long as I can remember). I'm just wary of a watch that has that day/date complication but no hand-winding.

Re: Vote for the "BEST" field watch

I usually shake my SNK for just about 1 minute in the morning at around 8am, set the time (if it’s not running) and then wear it for the whole day until I take it off at around 9pm. When I’m about to wear it again the next morning it would still be ticking. I believe the auto winding mechanism of 7S26 movement is pretty efficient.

Re: Vote for the "BEST" field watch

Ok, so out of the watches I personally own it looks like:

    1. Seiko SNK803
    2. Marathon JSAR
    3. Citizen Avion

This is out of 44 votes in the poll. Anyone care to add their vote? Please remember the poll is asking what is the best field watch that I currently own.
