What's the point of ultra-high water resistance in watches?

Forgive me for asking what may be a newbie question, but what is the point of watches that are marked as being water-resistant down to 1000M or beyond when the deepest recorded SCUBA dives have only been around 300M? To add to that, those record-setting dives were of very short duration and required long periods of decompression afterwards. On air alone, humans cannot really go much beyond 100M underwater, so it seems highly unlikely that any watch with a water resistance rating of 300M or more would ever have that rating tested in actual use.

You need a watch rated to much deeper than you actually intend to go.......for example a 30 meter watch is only good for washing hands, 50 meter for showering or wading in pool, etc....there is a great chart here someplace I will link you too. You want a bridge rated for more cars than it will actully hold right? I want a watch rated higher than I intend to dive.

Buying a higher atm pressure rated watch provides extra safety factor for the user. If you can get a 20 or 30 atm rated watch for the same price as a 10atm... go for the higher atm rating. (all else being equal of course).

What's the point of spending thousands of dollars on a watch? What's the point of having an awesome car with tons of power? What's the point of living? You're just going to die anyway.

It's exactly that there is no point. It's cool and it feels good.

As for 200/300m, for me its just nice to know that if I were to accidentally come into contact with some water my watch would still work afterwards. My phone wouldnt, but my dive watch would still tell the time!! As for 1000m and 2000m and 3000m and 100000000000000m I think its just so that if some old guy holds up his 300m Submariner and asks why my Deep Blue is so massive I can say that its because it will still tell the time long after his puny Rolex has crushed .

A while back I was talking to a Doxa AD, and he explained the un-realistically high (from a diver's point of view) water resistance by saying, 'Imagine reaching your hand in the water while on a moving boat...'

A high WR just means you never have to worry about it being compromised.
