    ETAs made in China?

    Hi,

I saw more watches of all brands with ETA 2824,2836,etc. movements recently. For curiocity I bought a fake R#l#X that has a gold tone TIMON 2824 inside. IIRC, there was a TIMON brand in Jiangsu province with a standard movement. I wonder who made those ETAs in China? It seems those fake watches have upgraded from Seagull ST6, Diamond 35 jewels to ETAs. Does Swiss ETA still make those models? The situation is quite confusing.

    Cheers,

Sorry. The TIMON is not an ETA copy. I did not look closely enough. Here is an image of it. But I do see many watches with ETA movements. I will check if I can find any information about this movement.

This is a German Durowe 7722/4 movement! That is a big surprise.
Some ETA movements are probably made in China. ETA 2824 can be bought for $15 in Guangzhou.

Hi Zhang, Can you please tell me the source for the ETA2824 in Guangzhou? I may be there before the end of the year, and would like to pick up a dozen or so movements at that price! :)

    Hi Derek,

Long time no see you. Have you caught any new vintage Chinese lately?

There is a huge watch market near the railway station. All latest models of world famous brands can be found there.:-D (the biggest source of all fake watches)

ETA manufactures movements in both China and Thailand for the Asian market with the vast majority being sold to Hong Kong.

    See the interesting thread/interview below.

Thanks for the link! I will take time to read the thread. I heard that China also make watchcases and parts for foreign cmpanies. This made me wonder why those big brands are still sold for so much?O| These are in fact Chinese watches.

ETA only sells their Chinese movements to the Asian market. All of the movements they sell to the European watch companies are still made in Switzerland. In the interview, it is explained what constitutes a "Swiss Made" watch.

AFAIK Thai ETA movements are quartz only. I always understood that to be the case with Chinese ETA also.

Having said that, I saw a picture of various products made by a watch parts factory in Guangdong Province that appeared to include rotors that look identical to that used on a 2428-2. Sub-contractors for ETA, or suppliers for the counterfeit trade?

A simple rule when buying a 'Chinese ETA automatic'; if it doesn't have the Swiss crest marked 'ETA' under the balance, then it ain't ETA.

Even if they have that Swiss crest "ETA",that I think is also very easy to fake, I would refuse to buy any watch with an ETA for more than $100 if an ETA 2824 was only $15. Either real Swiss or not.:-D

BTW, Chascomm, do you have any knowledge about that German Durowe 7522 movement? Who made them? That is the worst so far among my automatics.
