    New images of Tianjin 1963

    Hi all,

Here are some new images of the elusive original Tianjin 1963 chronogaph. These are better images of this rare vintage Chinese pilot watch. I have yet to see one in person. The dial is different from the other one on Seagull's website.

    Cheers,

    Zhang

    Hi Soviet !!

Thanks again for the pics !!

I'm more and more convinced that those movements were not produced in china at all...

My theory is that they never got to produce any, probably because or base materials of poor quality... But it is more than likey that when they bought the production line, the had a batch of non-finished, naked movements, especially for for training purposes.

To avoid official failure, they probably just cased this batch of movements. But no other ones ever got out of the factory...

    Your opinions ?

    BB

    Hi B Brasil,

I have no hard evidence but I feel Tianjin did not have the capability to produce such a high grade watch by 1962 when it was only a few years since they made the 1st Chinese watch in 1955.
However, I heard that the Tianjin 1963 chronograph was only a 2nd national grade watch with an accuracy of +,-45 s/day,and only some 1,100 watches were made, It could be an attempt to make an indegenous watch but did not succeed?
China had similar projects in those days with no regard to cost, but political concern was given priority. Have you ever heard of the Red Flag 20 camera? The only Leica M copy in the world with some 200+ cameras made. Production cost was about RMB 6,000, or about $4,000 1970's US dollars for each camera! So I will not exclude the possibility of a locally made watch.

    Kind regards

    zhang

    Hi Russ,

You are welcom. I wish one day this watch could be included in my huge vintage Chinese watch collection.

    Cheers,
