    Vintage chinese mechanical...pedometer?

Greetings VCM fans. This post is technically off-topic for this forum, so I won't be too upset if the moderators choose to remove it, but I found something on Taobao recently which I thought might be of interest to those who appreciate vintage Chinese mechanical devices.

I stumbled across this and for a moment thought that I had discovered some amazingly rare pocket chronograph:

It is, in fact, a mechanical pedometer, for measuring steps:

The dial text tells me that this was made in a factor in Beijing, but beyond that, I know nothing about it.

I'm embarrassed to admit that, prior to this, I actually had no idea that non-electronic pedometers even existed. It turns out they have existed for centuries, and da Vinci came up with the idea first. da Vinci had military applications in mind, and since the Taobao seller selling this is also selling a lot of old PLA militaria, I have to assume that this device was used as a navigational tool for marching soldiers.

    Interesting stuff!

Very cool. I remember the Soviet Zarja pedometers used to show up on eBay from time to time, but often even the sellers don't know what they are.
