Aluminum Bezels......Going The Way Of The Buffalo

They are becoming more and more scarce on new offerings. Ceramic and sapphire bezels seem to be the new trends. Granted, ceramics and sapphire are superior, almost perfect materials for the purpose. They will look virtually the same in 20 years. That's the problem. Aluminum bezels show their age and that also can be pretty cool, IMO. I think it's interesting that the Squale Tropic GMT has a ceramic bezel that is intended to resemble a faded aluminum one. Maybe there are others. Ahhh well.....getting tough to find buggy whips too. And another thing......blahblahblah

Yeah I've wanted a 5-digit sub just to have ability to swap out bezels. Can't do that with ceramic

I’ll take the stay new look every time. It’s nice with vintage pieces to get patina, but I’d never hit a watch hoping for that look. That’s something that just happens.

Could just be a current popular trend as new materials become the mainstream. I wouldn't be surprised if it just follows a wave of marketing. Probably see a return in a few years.

I could foresee the manufactures offering ALU but not a lower price than ceramic, and if that is the case I'm sure most would continue to choose ceramic.

Interesting to see how it pans out.

It'll be like the Hesalite/sapphire crowd. The latter is clearly superior for purpose, but there will always be those who romance the former.

I guess that means, now is the time to go on an adventure with an aluminum bezel so in 40 years it's the one everyone else says, "I wish I had got one back then!"

Sapphire and ceramic bezel inserts can shatter. Aluminum scratch fairly easily.

NTH uses steel inserts to reduce the disadvantages of Aluminum, ceramic and sapphire.

    Really like bronze inserts

Doc has made me a firm believer in the utility of steel bezels.

I am one of those weirdos that truly prefers steel or aluminum.

For desk divers maybe. I prefer steel or aluminium but would opt for sapphire over ceramic.

I had to replace a cracked shroud on my Darth Tuna after a moderate impact on the ladder frame when getting out of the water in a swell at the end of a dive. Ceramic isn't the best idea in a dive watch.

I like the steel of the NTH's too. It will be interesting to see how they age. NTH is the only one using steel that I know of. I don't know of anyone using genuine Bakelite anymore. And there are a few other materials I.E., graphite, MOP, bronze, brass, etc. But I will miss the look of the anodized and painted aluminum bezels. So many classics used them. They are fading away in more ways than one.
