Marathon SAR watches - and date windows

What is with the damn insistence on Date windows?

I know that some of the Navigator and Field models might come with a no-Date option.

but ... c'mon... and white 4:30 windows on the most normal sized ones???

    The #worst

Not sure why I am complaining, saving money! :)

I can forgive the Day-Date models. Mostly.

FWIW, I do like the old SAR with the 3:00 day window but Marathon hasn't made that one in years.

    e.g. as seen here

The date windows are there because they are specified by the various contracts and all numerals must be visible hence the lousy 4:30 locations. Marathon doesn't necessarily produce watches that they think the consumers will like. They produce watches that fulfill contract requirements.

Thanks that does explain the 4:30 thing well from a design perspective

Thing is it must literally be one of the simplest things to just “not” cutout the hole in the dial. The dial is otherwise perfect for the reason you described - all the other markers are there already.

People are used to / accept watches with ghost dates esp. with ETA movements. I could almost guarantee that any MOQ they have would sell out no problem... if nothing else because it would be rare, but also because it would look better (to some/many).

As for contracts, Gnomon apparently contracted them to make a black run. It seems they could equally contract a No Date. The risk is taken off Marathon to the seller in that instance. Shame they did not do that... Gnomon have done some real “out of the box” designs with other manufacturers.

Exactly. They are tool watches and the date is part of the tool.

Will I get shouted at if I say that I like the look of the date and its position on the GSAR?

I bought the TSAR for the exact look it has, including the date window. Love the look and feel of this big chunk of a watch Don’t like it, don’t buy it.

    Absolutely not!

I’m just sad because I love the watches but just don’t enjoy a couple things which would easily be addressed and offered as an *option* for those like me with different preferences.

“Dial: just don’t cut a hole in a few of them...”

    Solved.

For the people that say the date is part of the tool, that’s great but for me under almost no circumstances do I need/want to see the date ... for me the tool would be more pure / legible without it. But I appreciate we have different needs and wants...

It would appear that you & I are twin sons of different mothers! To confirm, a couple questions: Do people always seem to comment on your "Movie Star Good Looks"? Are you a "Cunning Linguist"? Finally: Do you look good in cheap clothes?
