Not since the true, but unacknowledged, original Monster, the HAQ, 8F35 equipped, SLR001/003 transformed into what's now considered as the 1st generation Monster SKX779/781 autos, way back in 2000; has there been a more extensive restyle of this truly iconic design than the newly released, Gen 4 trio of, JDM-for-now, SBDY033/035/037.
I mean, we're talking new hands here, a first-ever change of those in the long history of the lineup. Then there's the redesigned case and bezel, all cleaned up for a more streamlined, bolder, "faster" look. And though at first blush the bracelet looks very similar to the classic one of so many years, I'm now thinking that it also has gone through a makeover, albeit a comparatively mild one.
Received it last night and opened it earlier today like so:
Good to see Amazon Japan finally shipping interesting watches overseas, even if they're still not too consistent or dedicated. You gotta catch 'em at the right time.
Box in the middle. Amazon Japan's own, unique way of completely immobilizing watchbox in place by shrink-wrapping it to a piece of cardboard the size of the box bottom.
Stanley FatMax Xtreme overkilling yet another task by piercing and making a small cut in the shrinkwrap to free the goods.
And here's what's in it. A beauty!
Shining through felt fuzz
Sharp, fast and clean best describe the new Monster design.
Teeth transferred from the face (Gen 2) to case and bezel (Gen 4). Another major redesign.
Same lugs, different lugs. Though looking familiar, the lugs have been done over as well.
Almost no curves on hands and no tapers on markers. The 12 o'clock shield remains fairly unchanged from Gen 3, if changed at all.
Love the way the bar cyclops bulges out the "space time continuum" of the crystal. LOVE CYCLOPS! You hear?
Crown hangs out in the breeze unprotected, a la Sumo. Though I'd like to think that's in keeping with updated, current aesthetics and fashion, I still can't shake the feeling that it's just a crude cost-cutting measure.
