26mm thick! Not what I would call compact but incredible feat of engineering!

love the details, and hope some go into the next po,
    but I'm unimpressed,
the technical challenge is to make a wearable ultra deep diver,
    this ain't it.

It’s a chunky timepiece, no doubt about it... and pretty well done as well. But I still like the Helberg CH1 as the DeepSea hommage better...

Perfect for when the DSV Alvin wants to escape its 'hum drum' life documenting hydrothermal vents on the sea floor by pretending it's the Lotus from "The Spy Who Loved Me".

I think Omega has scored quite the coup with this announcement. Three of the prototype Ultra Deeps went down, two came back up - the third was stuck on a remote control EVA vehicle that got stuck in the mud, and was subsequently recovered when a second recovery dive was made. According to reports, ALL three prototypes, including the one stuck on the EVA, came back working perfectly !!

The additional depth record over Rolex is not enough to write home about, but the short development time (reportedly around six months) and the multiple prototypes all meeting the depth challenge certainly are, as is the new technology used to bond the seals between Sapphire crystal and LiquidMetal interface, and the crown sealing techniques to support the depth rating of 15 THOUSAND METERS !!

Is it a bit too thick for casual wear at 28mm ? Yeah. So was the original Rolex record breaker. Could they sell a few at a tidy price to Dive Watch enthusiasts if they scaled the thickness (and depth rating) of the consumer version back to something in the range of 16-18mm ? If I was a betting man, I’d say that’s a no-brainer, given the new technology involved and the record breaking story.

Time will tell (sorry about that one), but you have to admit this whole story has the flavor of an adventure film. Good on Omega for putting themselves on the cutting edge of exploration. It’s a world class achievement, and they have rightful claim to a fantastic marketing opportunity.

The first thing I thought when I heard the news was Rolex isn't going to be happy about this.

I think the watch looks great and hopefully we will see a no date PO in the future. Maybe even with those lugs!

It looks like something they'd have in a glass case at the Omega headquarters lobby or maybe something you'd whip out when showing off watches in one of the "what are you wearing...." threads. Not something I would walk around wearing. It's a shoulder-shrug for me.
