New strap for my Max Bill Chronoscope

I've always found the Max Bill a very hard watch to dress down and inject with playfulness. After many failed attempts with different straps, I decided I would take things into my own hands and custom make a strap for it.

I signed up for a leather making workshop here in HK with the expressed goal of making a watch strap with character for the MB and below are the fruits of 9 hours of labour (and also plenty of patient assistance from the instructor!! Full credit where it's due)

What I learnt about the straps for this watch in this process is the following (and these are my opinion only):
    - dressier style straps suit it better (eg. Avoid two switch straps, stick to finer leathers)
    - at least for my skin colour, a darker coloured strap is a better match
    - keep it simple (eg. Match the colour of the stitching to the leather, or at most, only use white contrast stitching)
    - looks better with a 4mm taper (eg. 16mm at the buckle ends. Vintage vibes, baby. Groovy)

Anyway, hope you enjoyed this. The whole process took a total of 9 hours over two Saturdays and I certainly have a vastly enhanced appreciation for just how difficult and labour intensive these small handmade leather goods are.

    Peace

Thanks guys! On further reflection, I think this watch is a strap monster as some people mentioned, but probably only for colours rather than styles or material (eg. a NATO won't suit it).

Nice work. I just picked up a max bill hand wound myself and am trying to figure out what kind of strap to pair it with. What do you think about a suede strap with the max bill line? Have you tried it out?

    Hello!

Congrats on your purchase and I gotta admit I've been previously tempted to swap my chrono for the handwind. As for the suede strap, I haven't tried a suede strap on it before and I think if I were to get another strap for the watch, it would be a suede one.

Can I ask, by handwind are you referring to the 34mm version with the 18mm lugs?

I just want to clarify because I've found the Chrono works best on a strap with a 4mm taper but I'm not confident that applies to 18mm lugs (14mm ends would look awkward...!). I guess my rule of thumb (and probably based on my own tastes) as mentioned above is err on the side of conservative and dressier for straps with Max Bill designed watches - they're an understated design and so you don't want the straps to 'overwhelm' the overall look. Just my opinion.
