    Audemars Piguet 2.4 MHz

So there is an auction schedued for the fourth of May and the seller is advertising an Audemars Piguet with a 'Beta 21' movement with an estimated price of €8,000. Thing is, it isn't a Beta 21 movement at all. It is a rebranded Omega 1510 or 1511 movement. This is (essentially) the same 2.4 MHz movement used in Omega's 1974 Marine Chronometer.

I have e-mailed the seller to correct their listing but they probably won't take any notice. No-one else ever does.

Still, if anyone is interested in old MHz-range HAQs and was interested in something just a little more unusual than the ubiquitous Omega MC (and if they have deep pockets and more money than sense) then keep an eye on this auction!

Only 4 digits? Nah, that doesn't rate "more money than sense."

Phillips has a gold Daytona given by Ayrton Senna to a longtime friend. Engraved caseback. Superb provenance. Extra Senna goodies. Upper estimate pre-sale is 200K but I wouldn't be surprised if it blows through that. THAT'S more money than sense, IMO. :) (It's amusing to stream the auction to watch insanity bloom, when it gets down to 2-3 bidders who really, really, really want the piece.)

The AP may well not sell, too, much less hit that upper estimate.

Email the auction house. THEY will correct the listing (or drop it). If they don't, post who they are.... We'd like to know

The outfit advertising the watch appear to be the ones running the auction, so I believe I have contacted the right people. I did finally get a response to day "thank you for pointing out our error" but they have done nothing to change the listing. I guess they reckon they can get more for a Beta 21 than for a 1511. Or perhaps they just don't appreciate the meaning or significance of the error.

I emailed them too... maybe they didn't believe you! Oh well... their reputation, not ours.

    Re: Audemars Piguet 2.4 MHz

I see it is now listed as 'sold', though we are still somewhat ahead of the 4th May auction. Either they have pulled it to re-evaluate their position or they have actually found a buyer.

I have seen AP's with rebranded 1511s, listed as being Beta 21s and selling for 8 to 9k. Conversely, I have seen a properly labelled AP with rebranded 1511 sell for only 3k (despite being in fantastic condition). If the current seller paid over the odds for this example, I wonder how they will approach a second attempt at a sale. Reduce the asking price and absorb the hit, or talk-up the exotic nature of the 1511 and try for the same sort of price (8k estimate)?
