    Rolex Beta 21

Hammer just fell on one at Philips Geneva 9. Presale high estimate was 25,000 francs...hammer price was 50,000. Happy seller.

I wish some of those More Money Than Sense buyers were as interested in prototype 4 MHz watches as they are in primative, 8 kHz watches.
Ask me about 4 MHz watches

Why?! Then you might have never owned a prototype 4MHz timepiece. It's rather good news for us that these so called More Money Than Sense buyers largely ignore these exotic MHz-range watches.

    Re: Rolex Beta 21

I thought it was kinda odd that it went THAT high, but one must note it was:

    a) the historically interesting (to most of the horological world) Beta 21.
    b) it was a Rolex
    c) it was also in white gold. There were never a lot of these, and most are in yellow gold.

So the baseline was gonna be higher. I think perhaps it was the historical nature of the Beta 21, tho, because the watches quite often didn't hit the high estimates...much less double it. But it's auctions. One 1959 Omega, with a dial signed by a Kuwaiti sheikh of the time, almost petered out at around 7000...then someone jumped the bid to 10,000. (The increment at the time was 500.) Then it became a tug of war between 2 buyers. Final hammer price was about 24,000. Auctions are funny things.
