would not it be nice to have an ice pick on the back? Or we still can consider the replica of the Defense of the Caucasus medal?

But this is a manly watch and we demand it be functional!

I dig that, especially if you sharpen it after each glacier. An ice toothpick could be useful, though. A true tool of a watch. Sort of a Vostokinox to remind of the Alpine background, for those who didn’t get the hint already.

It is mission impossible to explain the use on such a surface postage stamp ... Better is an illustration on the theme alpinist

Interesting to see the detail of the raketa bezel baikonur. Does the compass work even in space? :)

    1) “Mission impossible” was my 1st thought. Then I remembered it’s losers’ wording for challenge.
I am pencilling sketches of a simple reminder (of course not the full 300-odd words tutorial!), and it seems to work as such. Elbrus silhouette included. And it’s still definitely less crowded, or colourful, than most Soviet post stamps, even with the НЕМАГНИТНЫЕ (Not!magnetic) motto that I — heady Frenchie weaned on bortsch! — insist and shall lobby to include.

    2) In space? You’re “high” for sure. No bloody-maria nor black-russian way, of course. As for this Baikonur, it has two basic mistakes for a true tool watch claiming compass feature:
    - 10 deg. markings are ok, just funny if you know the limitations of the system; you can make an orientation wristwatch, not a true bearings compass...
    - 12 at bottom, 24 at top, is absurd (or lazy, as in habit-driven) thinking for that use. You have to point the GMT hand at the sun, not:
    a) stick a straight rod in the ground
    b) check it’s upright (with a plumb-line?)
    c) remove the watch off your wrist, or reverse it so the crown points to the left,
    d) align the 24h hand with the shadow.
    e) *yawn*
    f) regret you didn’t get a S*** Alpinist SARB, with all its flaws and cocktail looks.

A compass watch is supposed to give you a quick, approximate yet good enough, orientation on the go, while keeping walking, before a trails crossroad. When in doubt, forget it: put down the backpack, get the survey equipment out, etc.

are you suggesting to engrave the silhouette of your foot on the caseback?
It would certainly be very special but no, thanks

Not his foot . Bigfoot’s foot. While looking for its footprint, I found Hergé’s Yeti, aka Bigfeet for he has a full set of two. That will do for an Elbrus climber, as he has a Caucasian skin, and who will spot it’s some Rockies hopper or Tibet runner?
