It was a very similar coating Geoff, just a more golden/bronze colour and it seemed as resilient to scratches

An old watch with a shiney clear sapphire often still looks nice, but a new watch with scratched mineral glass looks rubbish. Just my two cents ;)
I'm not a big fan of Sapphire glass.
I wear everything in my collection, because watches are supposed to sit on your wrist.
One notch on a Sapphire will cost quite a bit, since it's damn near impossible to polish without the skills/patience/tools.
Softer materials are (IMHO) better for an everyday watch, since you can buff out scratches easily.
Just my two cents, your milage may vary

yeah, I don't really like nice things because they cost too much to fix when they break.

Sapphire would bring the cost to $300 min. It would be nice though.

Incorporating the medal may further narrow the group of interested purchasers to WW2 aficionados. I would stay away from the medal per se, but I am all for having a graphic/outline of the mountain on the dial, similar to the medal.

Not on the dial, but on the back. Dial is fine without Elbrus image.

Good idea. Maybe not the military theme, but it's an excellent reference for the caseback.

If it is doable. The caseback on the project 2016 watch is engraved not stamped if they would be able to engrave such a challenging picture it is going to be great.
