Jaquet Droz’s Perpetual Calendar Eclipse is a new moon phase display in two models with a distinctly contemporary design.

The Eclipse is one of the brand’s most iconic timepieces. Craftsmen in La Chaux-de-Fonds paired the moon phase complication, which displays the cycles of the night on the sky on the dial, together with the Perpetual Calendar, which raises these two complications to a new level of elegance.

On the ivory-colored Grand Feu enamel dial, two straight hands contrast sharply with the curves of two wavy hands, each tipped with a crescent moon.

The calendar information is easily legible on the dial: on the right is the current date, on the left is the day of the week. At 12 o’clock, a single-hand counter indicates the month with the leap year appearing discreetly in a small window.

At 6 o’clock, an ivory-coloured onyx index moves across the face of a golden moon, revealing, and then concealing it until its total eclipse. The whole spectacle unfolds on a night sky boasting eight stars, said to be the watchmaker’s favourite number.

The Jaquet Droz Perpetual Calendar Eclipse’s innovative design creates a perfect balance and contrast on the dial.

JD was in my radar and I checked some of its offering in person a couple of times. Not sure how long history Majestic Beijing line has, to me it is sort of an imatation of Blancpain villeret but it feels deeper and more mystery with the utilization of enamel dial technique (normally a large empty area on the dial for it).

The real watch is a little bit less gorgeous than it is in pictures, still great of course. Personally it think it's due to the over sized dial (>=41mm) and unflat glass. In 2013 JD presented a few smaller-sized varients of old models (not limited to Majestic Beijing line), good to know.

I wouldn't be surprised after all they share the same CEO " Mark Hayek"; and to be honest I like Jaquet Droz watches better than Blancpain. I have the impression that Blancpain has no variety in their lineup is either A or B.

I really, really, dislike that moon phase. It's awfully crude how the 'movement' is 'exposed'.

Just look at my signature, and you will quickly realize that is impossible for me to be a Swatch hater. Hate? That's a strong word man.

The "face" is extremely exquisitely finished, but the retrograding shelter looks crude true. To give it some shape (cloud or anything like that) and have it covered by the dial will be a nice approach i think.

Well, maybe better say you dont like it.
I have a feeling that Breguet and Blancpain dont get the respect they deserve in your inputs.
